Who We Are

Mocingbird is a fast-growing SaaS company modernizing how healthcare professionals manage continuing education and credentialing. Our web and mobile platform helps clinicians stay compliant with licensing requirements - without the administrative burden.

We are a live, production platform with real users, real revenue, and real impact in healthcare. Our software directly supports clinicians and organizations operating in regulated environments, and the work we do matters.

We’re a mission-driven, remote-first team founded by physicians who have lived the pain of medical credentialing firsthand. We care deeply about quality, empathy for users, and building software that delivers measurable value.

Position Summary

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a distributed engineering team as our product, platform, and organization continue to evolve.

This is not an easy role. We are moving quickly, the product is changing rapidly, and we are solving real problems - some inherent to the domain, some self-inflicted, and many that come with scaling a live system. Success in this role requires balancing speed with thoughtfulness, execution with long-term vision, and autonomy with accountability.

You’ll lead engineers working across our web, backend, and mobile applications, spanning onshore and offshore contributors, with a growing U.S.-based presence. You’ll be responsible for helping the team operate as a cohesive, high-output unit while maintaining quality, security, and reliability.

This is a hands-on, player-coach role. While this is primarily a leadership position, we expect Engineering Managers at Mocingbird to stay technically engaged - reviewing code, contributing when necessary, and being capable of diving into unfamiliar areas to unblock the team. This is not a pure management or people-only role.

The role comes with significant autonomy and discretion. You’ll be trusted to make decisions, shape execution, and take ownership of outcomes. How successful you are here will be very visible, and very impactful.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead and support a distributed team of engineers across web, backend, and mobile platforms
  • Align and manage onshore and offshore contributors to function as a single, effective team
  • Own delivery and execution for key product initiatives, from planning through release
  • Stay hands-on as needed by reviewing code, contributing to features, and unblocking technical challenges
  • Drive and evolve engineering processes that help the team move fast without losing sight of quality or long-term goals
  • Think holistically about system architecture, scalability, reliability, and maintainability
  • Partner closely with Product, Design, Operations, Sales, and internal stakeholders to translate business goals into software
  • Help define and uphold secure development practices, including supporting SOC 2 and HIPAA requirements from an engineering perspective
  • Ensure security, reliability, and quality are built into development—not bolted on later
  • Coach and mentor engineers through 1:1s, feedback, and career development
  • Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, learning, and continuous improvement
  • Measure outcomes and value delivered, not just activity or output

What You Bring

  • 2+ years of experience managing software engineering teams
  • 6–10+ years of overall experience as a software engineer
  • A strong technical foundation and the ability to get hands-on when needed
  • Comfort working in fast-moving environments with evolving requirements
  • A self-starter mindset—you identify problems, take initiative, and drive solutions
  • Experience delivering complex, cross-functional software projects
  • Experience with modern web application stacks; Ruby on Rails experience strongly preferred
  • Solid understanding of frontend technologies (Angular, React, or similar)
  • Experience working on or supporting mobile applications (React Native preferred)
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, deployments, and CI/CD (AWS, Heroku, GitHub)
  • Experience working in or alongside regulated environments (SOC 2, HIPAA, or similar)
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to balance execution and long-term thinking

Our Approach to AI

We actively use AI tools to improve developer productivity, triage issues, assist with debugging, and accelerate code generation—with intention and accountability.

AI is part of our product, our tooling, and our day-to-day workflows. At the same time, we are thoughtful about security, quality, and ownership. Any code generated with AI is owned by the engineer who ships it, reviewed like any other code, and held to the same standards.

We believe AI is a powerful tool—not a replacement for judgment, responsibility, or craftsmanship. This role requires comfort working with these tools and contributing to how they’re used responsibly across the team.

This Role Is a Great Fit If You...

  • Enjoy building and shipping real software for real users
  • Don’t shy away from code, even in a leadership role
  • Like solving hard problems in evolving systems
  • Are energized by moving fast while keeping the big picture in mind
  • Value autonomy and ownership over rigid structure
  • Care about outcomes, impact, and measurable value

This Role Is Probably Not a Fit If You...

  • Want a pure people-management role with no technical involvement
  • Prefer slow-moving or highly static environments
  • Are uncomfortable with ambiguity, accountability, or change

Tools We Use

  • Languages & Frameworks: Ruby on Rails, Angular, React Native
  • Infrastructure: Heroku, AWS
  • Version Control: GitHub
  • Project Management: Shortcut
  • Mobile Deployment: TestFlight, Google Play Console
  • AI / Dev Tools: GitHub Copilot, Cursor/Windsurf, ChatGPT, Gemini

Our Mission

Mocingbird’s mission is to reduce the administrative burden of continuing education and medical credentialing. Clinicians deserve to focus on care, not paperwork. We’re building tools that create real value, reduce friction, and improve lives.
